It begins at a soft green door, framed by lanterns and bold monochrome tiles that immediately set the mood for what lies within. To one side, a pocket of garden unfolds with a rustic clay pot nestled into a bed of tropical greens, a quiet threshold that balances restraint and romance. Almost deceptive in its calm, this entrance opens into a layered home in Siolim, Goa where patterns, textures, and moods are choreographed with ease.

Inside, the house quickly reveals itself as more than a retreat. For Ruchika, the homeowner, it is also a canvas of memory. Scattered through the rooms are artifacts she has gathered on her travels: prints from abroad, cane lights handwoven in Goa, whimsical lamps picked up at thrift shops, even an antique chair gifted by a close friend. Each piece carries its own story, and Studio Nõla has woven these fragments seamlessly into a design vocabulary that feels rooted in Goa yet unafraid of global inflections—bold, playful, and quietly elegant.

The living and dining areas flow out through large glass doors to the pool, a space designed with Goa’s mercurial weather in mind—partly sheltered, partly open to the skies. In the summer heat and during the heavy monsoon rains, it remains equally inviting. Here, patterned tiles, striped loungers, and Moroccan-inspired lampshades come together in an atmosphere that is both relaxed and theatrical. Inside, the adjoining bar and kitchen carry forward the rhythm of arches, woven textures, and graphic flooring, turning daily rituals into small celebrations. The stairway then becomes a journey in itself. Vertical black-and-white stripes, scalloped panelling, and patterned risers create a bold backdrop for art depicting women with big cats, while vintage cane furniture and a towering Gothic chair add a note of drama. Moving upward, the house shifts into intimacy.

The first bedroom is a cocoon, its lime-plastered walls softened by woven baskets from Bali and cane furniture that feels both light and grounding. Here, large doors open to the emerald paddy fields of Siolim. The ensuite bathroom surprises with a glass roof over the shower, letting in rain and sunlight in equal measure, blurring the line between indoors and nature.

In contrast, the second bedroom is softer, embracing a palette of gentle greens and natural textures. A thrifted lamp, striped linens, and wardrobes with woven cane shutters create a space that is at once nostalgic and fresh. Every corner feels composed like a vignette, small details speaking in quiet harmony.

The third bedroom leans toward boldness. Patterned tiles climb dramatically up the wall to frame the bed, transforming into a headboard that feels almost architectural. Above, vaulted beams in sage green echo the motifs below, creating a maximalist statement of cohesion. Its bathroom continues the story with deep green glazed tiles and graphic black-and-white floors.

Ruchika’s favourite, the fourth bedroom, radiates warmth. Buttery yellow walls pair with sky-blue accents, spindle-post beds, and intricately patterned flooring that ties the whole room together. Opening onto a private balcony with views of Siolim’s lush expanse, it feels both restful and radiant.

On the second floor, lightness takes over in a games room that recalls an English conservatory. Cane armchairs, animal-shaped side tables, and playful art lend it an air of whimsy, the perfect foil to the home’s more formal gestures.

Throughout, the house embraces contrast—bold yet serene, whimsical yet functional, patterned yet poised. Large openings bring in views of the fields, while collected artifacts—quirky cushions, baskets, ceramics, and artwork—layer the interiors with personality.

The result is a home that breathes Goa. Tropical yet sophisticated, storied yet effortless, it is a place where the rhythm of the monsoon, the play of light, and the memories of travel all find expression. More than a residence, it is a living album of experiences, crafted with intention and lived with joy.
